With over 3 million cases reported annually [1], many are aware of COPD and how it affects the respiratory system. This awareness has helped propel the advancement of treatment to facilitate the lives of those diagnosed with the condition. However, with the increased awareness of COPD comes the misconceptions of the disease. Our knowledgeable staff here at Oxygen Always are more than happy to debunk some of the common COPD myths.

Myth #1: Only Smokers Get COPD

Even though current and former smokers make up about 75% of those diagnosed with COPD [2], the disease isn’t just limited to those who are addicted to Nicotine. People who have been exposed to secondhand smoking or other air pollutants such as chemical fumes and concrete dust for an extended period time tend to develop the disease. In addition to secondhand smoking and air pollutants, those with the genetic disorder Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency are at risk of being diagnosed with COPD.

Myth #2: COPD Patients Can’t Exercise Due to Their Condition

Contrary to popular belief, exercising actually increases the quality of life for those diagnosed with COPD. Lack of exercise can lead to a decline in muscle mass, bone mass, and stamina, which can exacerbate your shortness of breath from COPD. Before looking into exercises to help with your COPD, consult your healthcare physician first for rehab specialists as well as portable oxygen concentrators to assist you in exercising.

Some of our portable oxygen concentrators go perfectly with exercise regimens to give you the oxygen needed to aid you with COPD. The Respironics SimplyGo is a great POC companion when getting a good workout as it’s both durable and lightweight. Another Respironics portable concentrator that will also make a good companion when exercising is the SimplyGo Mini since it’s both reliable and user-friendly, making it easy to use, no matter how intense the workout. If either concentrator doesn’t live up to your expectations, you can also use the Caire Freestyle Comfort oxygen concentrator since it can be worn close to the body with its ergonomic shape.

Myth #3: COPD Only Affects the Lungs

While COPD may primarily affect your shortness of breath, it also takes a toll on your heart. When your oxygen levels are low, your heart is forced to work harder, putting you at risk for heart disease and cardiac arrest.
