Oxygen Always knows that once you are diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or another chronic respiratory disease, it is common for your doctor to prescribe you medical grade supplemental oxygen. Obviously, every human and animal on earth requires oxygen to survive, but patients with COPD can no longer deliver the necessary amounts of oxygen to vital organs through blood flow. Since all organs in the human body need oxygen, this is where supplemental oxygen comes into play for patients with COPD.
Once you are prescribed supplemental oxygen, here is what your prescription will include:
– Flow rate and duration of use: The main basis for oxygen therapy. Depending on your bodies oxygen saturation your doctor will prescribe you a flow rate that will supplement the lack of oxygen.
– Delivery method: Your doctor will also recommend either a face mask or nasal cannula for oxygen therapy.
– Recommended oxygen delivery method: There are three units that deliver oxygen, portable oxygen concentrator, industry standard oxygen concentrators, or liquid oxygen.
– Documentation that proves COPD diagnosis: These documents support the doctor’s diagnosis of COPD and are required in order for you to receive Medicare or other insurance coverage for oxygen therapy.
– Health insurance: You will need to receive a Certification of Medical Necessity which is required in order for you to receive insurance or Medicare coverage and will ensure a smooth financial transition for you.
